Aldabra Giant Tortoise
The Aldabra giant tortoise, from the islands of the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, is one of the largest tortoises in the world.They may live to over 150 years and weigh up to 250kg. They evolved their giant size on small islands in the Indian Ocean.
Although protected today, these land tortoises were hunted in large numbers for their meat and oil by early seafarers in the 17th to 19th centuries.
